Irene Cordova, brings a decade worth of real estate passion, expertise, and integrity to the Northern New Mexico real estate market. After a successful career in California as a top broker in the Los Angeles market, she and her family of five moved “back home” to New Mexico to replenish their roots and put their city skills to work. As a committed community member, mother of three daughters, a dedicated wife, and an avid entrepreneur and business professional, Irene now proudly serves as an Associate Broker with Realty One of New Mexico. “Working in real estate gives me the opportunity to help my clients see, feel, and experience the beauty of what surrounds us in Northern New Mexico in a responsible and realistic way.” As a woman of mixed North and South American Indigenous descent on her mother’s side and Swedish descent on her father’s side, she realizes that many people come to this area because it offers them a different way of life. “Growing up in Roswell, NM and having lived in large cities the majority of my adult life, I certainly understand the initial ‘awe’ of visiting or wanting to live in Northern New Mexico… the beauty of this area is undeniable, but with great beauty, comes great responsibility.”
Irene and her husband Clarence Cordova, a former Aerospace professional, and multi-generational Acequia Mayordomo (waterkeeper) of mixed Pueblo and Hispanic descent live on their family's 10-acre ranch just south of La Jicarita. “It’s a lot of work!” says Cordova about living on the ranch. My husband was born and raised in Vadito, NM as were his parents, and their parents, and their parents. His family built and operated a water-powered mill or “Molino”, providing locally grown and ground corn, wheat, and other foods to people near and far. The Molino, an official Historic Site in New Mexico offers their children and their community a look into the past while providing opportunities for their future.
For Irene, selling real estate is a big responsibility. “As your broker, I’m responsible to you and your visions for the future. It’s my responsibility to understand all perspectives and help all parties arrive at an agreement that brings equal benefits to all. One thing I have learned is that I have to really “listen” to the needs of my clients. Sometimes, their needs change and I have to be flexible to their changes. In the end, it’s very satisfying to know that each party is happy with the results.”
Irene’s personal experience and knowledge gained from working, raising a family in, and tending to the lands of Northern New Mexico alongside her husband have gifted her with the foresight to understand the many systems that go into buying property in this unique area. “Water rights, septic systems, land use… It’s my job, not just as a realtor, but as a member of this community, to make sure my clients are educated on the importance of these systems, especially living in a high mountain desert where water is most precious to us. I feel I can use the knowledge I’ve gained to benefit my clients in this important aspect of their buying process.”
Throughout the years, Irene has been involved with local businesses providing office management consulting services. In 2004, she founded the first New Mexico Parent Teacher Student Association (NMPTSA) in the Taos Municipal School System. She is an active member of the State of New Mexico Acequia Association and an advocate for the safekeeping of the Acequia system and its cultural importance to communities state-wide.
“The real estate market is constantly changing,” says Cordova. “Staying on top of these changes and knowing what is happening right here, right now in the market ensures that my clients find their next forever home or perfect investment property… It’s wonderful when a former buyer or seller recommends my services. That’s when you know you’ve done a great job!”
