Becoming a realtor and house flipper 9 years ago, was a life changing experience. Before this I was a high school AP Calculus teacher for 16 years.
The transition from teacher to realtor was quite miraculous. It started when my wife's grandparents needed to move close to us. They had a very limited budget, and a fixed income. A good friend, Dave Torres, helped me find a fixer upper that they could afford, and immediately live in. They bought this house for a wonderful price, but it needed lots of work. After months of major repairs, and help from over 60 family members and church friends, the house was back in good repair.
Through the process of fixing up this house, Dave showed me how to put lots of value into a house with little money. He showed me how to install granite on your own, which walls to paint, and what color, where to get inexpensive carpet, door hinges, and handles. The importance of changing outlets, switches, and light fixtures.
During these months of work and learning on the go, Grandpa passed away, and Grandma moved in with us. It was only 6 months later, and time to sell their new house. It sold for twice the price they paid, and Grandma made a large amount of money. My eyes were now opened to the world of house flipping.
Dave helped me secure the next house to flip, and another after that. Before long I owned 3 houses to flip, and was sitting in the classroom as a teacher, thinking about how to get all this work done. I knew it was time to stop teaching and try house flipping full time.
Around this same time I earned my realtor's license. Family and church friends had seen my success as a house flipper, and were kind enough to trust me as their realtor. Successful transactions started happening, and my name got around in circles of influence, and word of mouth referrals kept coming.
I enjoyed being a teacher, and have really enjoyed my career as a realtor and house flipper. The construction and real estate knowledge has allowed me to be a tremendous help to my clients, family members and friends by helping them update, sell, and remodel their homes.
I love my job, and am very thankful for this career.
